Difference Between Underbust and Overbust Corsets

Abstract: From the 18th century to the contemporary day, Corsets have been a part of fashion endeavors. The history of corsets traces back to the Victorian era, albeit not all rosy and salacious. Let us understand what a corset is and how over-bust and under-bust corsets are different.

WHAT IS A CORSET?

A corset refers to an apparel style that is created to condense one's torso to emphasize the waist or elevate the bust. It provides an hourglass figure to women where the tummy is flattened and the bust gets lifted. While most corsets are created from fabric like cotton for breathability and convenience, there are many other fabrics like leather, brocade, lace, and velvet that are utilized in creating a corset.

A woman's appearance was approved by her waistline during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. A  lean waist and an upright stance was the identification of her personality and status and one of the significant motives behind corsets being so prevalent in those days. These corsets, which are usually made for attaining a desirable figure when fitted and laced properly, are made mostly of stuffed material like leather. Ribs or stays understood as boning is inserted into the inlets in the garment at even intervals. They include laces on either end and when these laces are pulled taut, the corset draws in the midriff and the midsection, building the imprint of a flattened belly

While many of us misunderstood the term corset for a waist trainer, there is a difference between them. However, both of them are used as waist slimmers, the corset does it with the aid of lace which is shrunk from the ends, and the waist trainer itself is designed from fabric that delivers a tight and compact fitting. There are various types of corsets but two main types are- Underbust and Overbust Corsets. These are two different shapes of corsets, let us understand how.

WHAT IS AN UNDERBUST CORSET?

Finding the right quality corset that suits your body type is very important. An Underbust corset is known to be a versatile layout of styling as it wraps the torso and the midrib area and surfaces under the bust section, rightly as the name suggests. It houses both function and fashion, offering the liberty to wear the corset over the clothes or any kind of bralette. It arises below the breasts and stops above the hips. You can wear it as an undergarment or style it over a shirt or any other piece of clothing because it can be supportive of making that waist look a little smaller and hourglass-shaped.

An underbust corset is a much better option for beginners; it provides much freedom in the movement of the body and covers half of the back. It is also easier to conceal under clothing and style in some unique manner. Moreover, underbust corsets are an affordable option for bras that induce the skin to shed or sweat and create rashes. These types of corsets are made to fit over the bust surface and provide support and purpose. Also, it improves the physique of breasts by lifting the bust, unlike a bra.

Plus pointers of the underbust corset-

  • It helps in taming the waist to get a perfect hourglass-shaped figure.

  • Eases the body movement as it covers just half of the back and front unlike overbust corset.

  • Does not exert pressure on the bust and is also great in terms of comfort.

  • For women with smaller breasts, an underbust corset helps to make your bust look bigger in appearance.

WHAT IS AN OVERBUST CORSET?

The overbust corset has a stature which commences under the arm area and ends just above the hips. This sort of corset enables to uplift the breast, ameliorate the waistline, and support the back. When the laces of overbust corsets are tightened, the compression and the rigidity of the corset provides all the support which is necessary to uplift the breast. One thing which makes it little less than an underbust corset is that it is not as versatile as an underbust corset because we can style it in only one way.

It is extended elevated on the ribcage region and surpasses the back scapula so it is tough to crouch over or lean over in an overbust corset. But they act as a great support for the lower back because it gives a better posture while sitting or standing. Carrying an overbust corset is much easier because it can be matched with any piece of clothing.

These kinds of corsets are different from the underbust corsets because it removes the question of bra selection and can be worn with any strapless dress or paired with jeans. The major advantage of an overbust corset is it doesn't uplift the bust while you sit.

Plus pointers of an overbust corset-

  • Overbust corsets cover the bust area and extend higher up to the back. The rigidity of the corset provides support to uplift the breasts.

  • It extends from the lower back to the upper back and helps to alleviate the back pain that is induced due to slumping.

  • Though it reduces mobility, it works well for both large and small-breasted women.

  • It can be styled under clothing as a top paired with a skirt or jeans.

Conclusion

Regardless of which type of corset you choose, both of them have their benefits and cons. A corset is comfortable and helps to enhance the waistline.
